Potential Side Effects

Aminophylline:

• Hepatic disease, alcohol consumption, and age can affect theophylline metabolism and dosing.
• Smoking can increase the clearance of theophylline, and changes in smoking status should be monitored carefully.
• Prolonged fever can reduce theophylline clearance.
• Theophylline can stimulate gastric secretions, so it should be used with caution in patients with gastritis or active peptic ulcer disease.
• Theophylline may cause urinary retention, so use caution in patients with prostatic hypertrophy.

Pentoxifylline:
